Defining an Electrical Emergency

Electrical emergencies are situations where there is an immediate risk of fire, electrocution, or serious property damage. A tripped circuit that resets normally is not an emergency. A burning smell from your consumer unit, exposed live wires, or sparks from a socket absolutely are.

Learning to distinguish between urgent and routine electrical faults can save you an unnecessary emergency call-out fee while ensuring you do not ignore something genuinely dangerous.

True Emergency Situations

  • Visible sparks, arcing, or flames from any electrical fitting or appliance
  • A persistent burning smell, especially from the consumer unit or sockets
  • Smoke or scorch marks around switches, sockets, or the fuse box
  • Someone has received an electric shock, however minor
  • Water ingress into electrical fittings during flooding or leaks
  • A socket or switch that is physically cracked with visible conductors
  • Total loss of power to essential medical equipment or heating in winter

What to Do Immediately

If you suspect a serious electrical fault, turn off the main switch at your consumer unit if it is safe to do so. Do not touch any suspect fittings with bare hands. If there is fire, evacuate the property and call emergency services before calling an electrician.

If water has entered electrical fittings, do not attempt to switch anything off while standing in water. Leave the property and call for help. Water and electricity are a lethal combination, and your safety is more important than your fuse box.

Emergency Call-Out Costs in Glasgow

Glasgow emergency electricians typically charge between eighty and one hundred and fifty pounds for the call-out fee alone, covering travel and the first hour of attendance. Hourly rates after the first hour range from sixty to one hundred pounds depending on the time of day and complexity.

Night rates, typically between 10pm and 7am, and weekend rates are higher. Bank holidays carry the highest premiums. Some electricians charge a flat emergency fee plus materials, while others bill purely by time. Always confirm pricing before the electrician attends.

What an Emergency Electrician Will Do

The priority is always safety. The electrician will isolate the dangerous circuit or the entire installation if necessary, then assess the fault. Temporary repairs may be made to restore essential power, with a return visit scheduled for permanent resolution.

You should receive a written description of the fault, what was done, and what further work is recommended. Any permanent repairs must comply with BS 7671 and be certificated. Do not accept verbal-only reports for emergency electrical work.

Reducing Your Risk

The best way to avoid emergency call-outs is regular maintenance. Schedule an EICR every five years, replace ageing appliances before they fail dangerously, and never ignore warning signs like intermittent tripping or warm sockets. A small investment in prevention avoids the stress and cost of midnight emergencies.

Keep your electrician's contact details saved in your phone. In a crisis, you do not want to be frantically searching online while your consumer unit is smouldering. A trusted local electrician who knows your property is invaluable.
